Ingles Self-regulated learning in amateur bands
an exploratory review

Although the literature recognizes the relevance of research on self-regulated learning
(Mendes and Polydoro, 2023; Gomes and Boruchovitch, 2023; Valera, Abrami, and Opitis,
2016), there is a scarcity of scientific studies on self-regulated learning and music. An
exploratory literature review found that international research on self-regulated learning and
music focuses mainly on validating measurement instruments and developing proposals for
higher education in music, with a focus on intermediate or advanced students. On the other
hand, Brazilian journals in the field predominantly feature research in its early stages, such as
exploratory or conceptual studies. Furthermore, articles on self-regulated learning and music
are predominantly based on the models proposed by Zimmerman (2002) and McPherson and
Zimmerman (2011). In addition, we observed that the research does not present a diversity of
learning contexts. In the case of Brazilian research, there is a need for empirical studies in
different contexts in order to broaden the understanding of self-regulated learning processes in
music. In addition, Veloso and Araújo (2019) state that research on self-regulated learning and
music is inconsistent in its attempts to satisfactorily relate this construct to metacognition.
Nascimento (2022) reinforces that it is essential to consider the learner's history, their sociocultural
context, as well as the culture and learning situations. Given the above, this paper presents
doctoral research being developed at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). This study
aims to verify the feasibility of applying a new model of self-regulated learning, “Learning
music by playing a musical instrument,” proposed by Nascimento (2023), based on Albert Bandura's
sociocognitive theory. In this sense, the author presents self-regulated learning as a complex
phenomenon, composed of multiple sources of information. Thus, this communication aimed
to map works on the theme, understand concepts, and identify gaps in the scientific field in
order to substantiate the construction of this proposal, as proposed by Creswell (2010).
Therefore, based on this literature review, we identified the need for empirical research that
proposes self-regulated learning models that relate this construct to metacognition.
Furthermore, there is a clear need for proposals that go beyond purely intrapersonal aspects,
considering cognitive processes, the learner's experiences, their trajectory, and their cultural
context with a view to enabling the individual's integral development. From this perspective,
we believe that the model proposed by Nascimento (2023) presents itself as a promising approach
for the development of students in amateur wind bands, as it understands learning from a
contemporary perspective.
