This paper is a case study conducted with a music teacher in order to discuss and contribute to the studies on motivation in music classes. A starting point was to search for researches carried out in elementary school that somehow raised questions about student’s school performance, and teacher's role in the motivational process. Data was collected through classroom observations and interviews with the teacher. The theoretical analysis was based on the defini- tion of the term "motivation" and its variations in school education context, considering the types of motivation, motivational strategies, the influence of the teacher in the classroom and the relationship between teacher and stu- dents. The results show that the choice of repertoire, the acknowledgment of students as active agents, the partnership between the music teacher and the class teacher as well as the positive stimuli from the teacher are aspects that motivated students to participate more during class.
