Abstract

Rhythm is an inherent component of music and has been increasingly and diversely studied. The objective of this study was to outline the state of the art of research in the fields of rhythmic perception and reproduction of rhythmic patterns. The search was conducted using the descriptors rhythmic reproduction, rhythmic perception and reproduction of rhythmic patterns, which identified 88 studies. Of these, 26 were selected, which were articles and chapters of books published in Portuguese and English; they involved the subjects as participants. It was possible to identify a cerebral lateralization in the activities of perception and reproduction of rhythmic patterns. A statistically significant relationship was identified between constructs such as language, IQ, phonological loop and rhythmic perception. The studies also point to the preference of certain rhythmic structures by babies, the ability to differentiate rhythmic patterns and to reproduce rhythmic patterns from the age of 5.
